Maria Menounos to Wrestle at Wrestlemania, State of Divas Division

WWE announced on Twitter earlier today that there would be a special announcement concerning the WWE Divas and Wrestlemania on the television show “Extra” tonight. Given that “Extra” host Maria Menounos has wrestled before (pinning Beth Phoenix in an eight-person tag match) I had a feeling that the announcement was going to be about Menounos appearing at Wrestlemania in some way, possibly in a match.

Sure enough, while nothing was made official, I was right. Menounos was interviewing Kelly Kelly when Beth Phoenix and Eve showed up, with Beth saying that Menounos should be interviewing has as the Divas Champion and not Kelly Kelly (and, in my opinion, Beth is right). Memounos reminded Beth that the last time they were in a ring together she pinned her and Beth responded by grabbing Menounos’ face, which prompted security to come and separate the two. Beth challanged Menounos to a match at Wrestlemania and Menounos said that she would be there. Since I don’t see Menounos wrestling the Divas Champion one-on-one, this will probably lead to a tag match with Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos vs. Beth Phoenix and Eve Torress.

I am mostly happy about this match and only upset about one small thing. First, I’m thrilled that the WWE Divas are going to have a match on the card at Wrestlemania (there had been rumors that they would be delegated to the dark match if they had one at all). I know that the WWE Divas is a hot topic these days, but my opinion is and has always been that if they were given the time and storylines by Vince McMahon and those in charge at WWE, they could become just as big a draw as some of the mid-card storylines and wrestlers currently in the men’s division. So for them to have a match and, for the second year in a row, for it to be a match that will get a lot of national mainstream media coverage, I’m thrilled. I also like having celebrity involvement at Wrestlemania because I think it is one of the things that separates Wrestlemania from the other pay-per-views, including the rest of the “Big Four.” Maria Menounos may not be Shaq, Floyd Mayweather or even Snookie, but she is still a household name and a bestselling author and her presence will only help WWE.

The only thing I’m upset about is that the Divas Championship will not be on the line at Wrestlemania for the fifth year in a row (the last time was at Wrestlemania 23 when Melina battled Ashey, every year since then has been a gimmick match). For the Divas Championship, and their division, to begin to gain respect, the title needs to be given more prominence not just at Wrestlemania, but at the other pay-per-views as well as Raw and Smackdown. Having the Divas compete in “Bunnymania,” Lumberjill and celebrity matches at Wrestlemania does nothing to help improve the Divas division, but at least having them compete on the main card of the big show is something (which is better than nothing) and a baby step in the right direction.

About Micah Kleid

I am what you call a WWE Super Fan. I have been a fan since 1991, when I was 10 years old, with the first pay-per-view I ever saw being Survivor Series of that year when The Undertaker made his debut. From that moment I was hooked and I never looked back. Now, over 20 years later, I watch Raw and Smackdown every week, I attend nearly every pay-per-view that comes to Baltimore and I travel fairly extensively for live shows, including every Wrestlemania 18 and then every one since Wrestlemania 23. But, despite being a Super Fan, I am still critical of the product and, like many fans, feel I could turn things around in less than a year if they would hire me as a member of the creative team. So this that won't happen, this blog was born instead.
